Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster in "Blues for Yolande;" The Hawk's sound is unmistakable. Here he's matched by another maestro of the instrument, the legendary Ben Webster. Coleman Hawkins attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, where I studied my first two years of college before a monster tornado half-destroyed it in June of 1966, and I had to transfer to another college in Texas. It was rebuilt into a beautiful campus, although I think much of the charm of the old buildings may have been lost. But the Hawk was an Ichabod before becoming a world-wide celebrity. Gabe Meruelo.
